Flow and Electromagnetic Fields in Materials Modelling
organised by Prof. K.A. Pericleous
University of Greenwich, UK
Electromagnetic Processing of Materials (EPM) is an important and fast-growing technique in the development of modern materials. The application of magnetic or electric forces to conductive metals and alloys in the liquid state opens new possibilities for altering microstructure, distributing nano particles in suspension, countering the effects of gravity, controlling flow, damping turbulence, heating, etc. EPM applications range in scale from nano-particle manipulation, to tons of liquid metal treated in the presence of magnetic fields. Some of these processes are specifically designed and made possible by the use of electromagnetic force, like magnetic levitation, whilst others involve electric currents essential for electro-thermal or electro-chemical reasons, for instance in electrolytic aluminium production. The complex interaction between flow and electromagnetic fields can only be analysed realistically with the aid of computer models. Such multi-physics models present a considerable challenge, especially where moving free surfaces are involved.

This session invites papers on the development and application of computer models in the following EPM list of topics:

  • electromagnetic levitation of liquid metals for contactless processing or property determination
  • cold crucible melting and related applications
  • electromagnetic flow control
  • duct flows in the presence of electromagnetic fields
  • electromagnetic stirring and microstructure control in castings
  • aluminium electrolytic cells
  • VAR and ESR ingot remelting
  • thermoelectric microstructure control

Please note that papers that are found to fall outside the scope of this session may be considered for other sessions.
