Railroad Bearing Technologies
organised by Prof. C. Tarawneh
University of Texas-Pan American, USA
and Dr. B. Wilson
Amsted Rail Industries, Inc., USA
Session Aims and Scope
The recent push by railroad industries across the globe to increase the maximum load capacity in freight cars has promoted the need to improve and enhance the reliability and service life of railroad bearings that will be operating under these extreme load conditions. The latter also brings into question the bearing condition monitoring technologies currently in use on railways around the world. The effectiveness of such systems in detecting and identifying distressed bearings in service is of paramount importance as we move into more demanding operating conditions.

This multidisciplinary session aims at bringing together researchers and experts from various fields reporting on current advances in railroad bearing research and development. The discussion should promote the interaction and collaboration among universities, research centers, railway operators and industry in order to identify challenges, propose solutions and indicate directions of future research.

The Session should bring together Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing, Civil, and Materials experts and will cover, but not limited to, the following topics:

  • Advances in railroad bearing research
  • Railroad bearing testing and performance characterization
  • Bearing condition monitoring systems
  • Enhancements in bearing adapter and related components
  • Wear and rolling contact fatigue
  • Bearing lubrication
  • Thermal and dynamic analysis of railroad bearings
  • Bearing modelling techniques
