Special Session Call for Papers:

Special Session: RW2016-S04
Switches and Crossings: Modelling, Simulation and Testing
Session Aims and Scope

Turnouts/switches and crossings are the important asset in the railway network for a proper operation of rail services. However, they are the complex and expensive trackworks in the whole rail network in terms of both the nature of their design and operation, and the investment and maintenance costs. Installation and maintenance of turnouts form a significant proportion of infrastructure costs for railway managing companies.

This special session aims for researchers, experts and designers working on railway turnout research and optimisation from universities and research centres. It also aims for practicing engineers working in turnout design and maintenance at railway management and turnout manufacturing industries. The session should bring together the experts in design, testing, monitoring, and maintenance of turnouts and will cover, but not limited to, the following topics:

  • Train-turnout interaction
  • Turnout optimisation
  • Wheel-rail interface at switch and crossing
  • Turnout damage
  • Turnout condition monitoring
  • Turnout maintenance
  • Field testing
  • Turnout model validation

For specific questions regarding the scope of this session please contact the organisers:
  • Professor Elias Kassa, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway, (elias.kassa AT
  • Dr. Valeri Markine, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands (V.L.Markine AT

Please note that papers that are found to fall outside the scope of this session may be considered for other sessions.

Abstract Submission
To submit abstracts for this special session, please follow the normal abstract submission procedure but please select "RW2016-S04" when asked "Is this paper part of a special session?"
