Wheel-Rail Damage: Influencing Factors and Metallurgical Aspects
Session Aims and Scope
The wheel-rail contact represents the interface between the railway infrastructure and the rolling stock. Several damage mechanisms on both rails and wheels originate at this interface, causing high maintenance efforts and costs. An important driver of damage mechanisms is the dynamic character of the loading at the interface, depending on vehicle and track properties. The development of damage in time is also strongly influenced by the material properties of the wheel-rail contact system.
This session aims at a deepening of the understanding of phenomena acting in the wheel-rail interface, affecting the structural integrity on a longer term. The question is: what are the main influencing parameters in wheel-rail damage and how can the development of damage be predicted reliably?
The session should bring together researchers and experts from several fields presenting their work and experience on wheel-rail damage, and will cover, but not limited to, the following topics:
