Modelling and Simulation of Railroad Vehicle Systems: Enhancements and Applications
Session Aims and Scope
The use of computational mechanics techniques is a necessity for design, analysis, and performance evaluation of railroad vehicle systems. Advances in computational multibody system dynamics (MBS) allow accurate modelling through the use of fully nonlinear formulations that capture significant details and can be used as the foundation of efficient solution procedures and algorithms. Vehicle vibration, lateral stability, curving behaviour, effects of track flexibility, wheel/rail wear, pantograph-catenary interaction, and accident investigations are examples of topics that are of interest to railway administrations and vehicle manufacturers.
Most MBS commercial computer codes include a module for railroad vehicle dynamics. Because of the challenges encountered in the vehicle/track modelling and simulation, railroad vehicle dynamics has become an important MBS dynamics subfield. These challenges include the development of efficient and accurate computational methods for wheel/rail interaction based on accurate modelling of the contact geometry and contact forces, development of algorithms for the description of rail geometry and flexibility, and development of numerical methods for the calculation of stationary motions and vehicle stability.
This session will bring together researchers and industry users of computational railroad vehicle dynamics and will cover, but not limited to, the following topics:
