Special Session Call for Papers:

Special Session: RW2016-S11
Geotechnical Aspects in Rail-Track Performance
Session Aims and Scope

Geotechnical aspects are very important to be considered in all phases of a rail-track project, starting from the conception, design and maintenance. However, these aspects are very complex and are still considered in trial and error basis for decision, despite the recent efforts in more fundamental understanding through several research projects.

This session aims to bring together researchers, practitioners and experts from railway engineering and geotechnical engineering reporting on the current state of rail-track and substructure research and development. It should include new rail-track design and renewal of old rail-track addressing mainly the works strategy for highest speed operations.

The session will cover, but not is limited to, the following topics:

  • Geotechnical characterization for modelling, design and bearing capacity evaluation
    • Laboratory tests
    • Field tests
  • Soil-structure interaction
  • Track deterioration
  • Track transitions and special trackwork
  • Specific geotechnical characterization of intermediate layer in old rail-track
  • Coupling hydrodynamic-mechanical behaviour of geomaterials and layered systems under dynamic loading
  • Subgrade / Roadbed improvement to reduce maintenance work on ballasted track
  • Geosynthetic applications in track
  • Deformation of ballasted track under earthquake
  • Numerical modelling
  • Conception and design to upgrade old rail-track for highest speed operations
  • Renovation of ballasted track to ballastless track
