Special Session Call for Papers:

Special Session: RW2016-S15
Train Aerodynamics
Session Aims and Scope

Aerodynamic properties of trains are responsible for energy efficiency, safety and environmental influence of trains to their surroundings including air pollution and noise. Prediction of aerodynamic properties of trains is a complicated task and both numerical and experimental techniques are required for accurate predictions and understanding of the flow behaviour. Reduction of aerodynamic drag has traditionally been the driving force for improvement of the aerodynamics properties of the trains. However, there are many other aerodynamic aspects such as crosswind stability, unsteadiness from passages of tunnels, platforms or other trains, ballast projection for high-speed trains, aero acoustics and soiling which require better understanding of the flows around trains and their influence to trainís aerodynamics.

Several advancements in experimental and numerical procedures have occurred in recent years. More advanced facilities and experimental techniques have been developed on the experimental side. Time-dependent simulations are the most important improvement in the numerical train aerodynamics used in the academia and gradually being introduced within the aerodynamics departments.

The proposed Session is meant as a place where engineers and researchers from train aerodynamics can exchange their ideas and discuss the recent achievements in the field of train aerodynamics and the related fields.

The abstracts are invited within (but not limited to) the following subjects:

  • Time-dependent simulations of flows around trains (DNS, LES, URANS and related techniques)
  • Experimental techniques applied in train aerodynamics
  • Aerodynamic shape optimization of trains
  • Simulations and experimental studies of wind-gust effects, overtaking, passage of other vehicles vehicle or infrastructure etc.
