Special Session Call for Papers:

Special Session: RW2016-S22
Durability of Railway Infrastructures and Rolling Stock
Session Aims and Scope

Railway infrastructures and rolling stock need maintenance, as ageing takes place continuously. Planning maintenance is a challenge. If not maintained in a timely and proper fashion, life cycle costs will increase drastically and emergency repair can bring unexpected train delays and cancellations. A properly functioning railway network is essential for our economy, thus the society demands a reliable railway system which requires less frequent maintenance, repair and replacement, in other words, a more durable railway system is highly desired. We would like to invite researchers and professionals to this special session to share your ideas, latest research and development progress and engineering practice towards building up a railway network with better durability and thereby lower life cycle costs. The session will cover, but is not limited to, the following topics:

  • Rolling contact fatigue;
  • Crack initiation and propagation;
  • Fracture and damage mechanisms in wheels and rails, as well as other railway components;
  • Prediction on the service life of railway components, infrastructures and rolling stock;
  • Multi-scale experimental and numerical investigations on the rail materials and structures.
