Special Session Call for Papers:

Special Session: RW2016-S23
Towards Automated Monitoring and Maintenance Systems for Railway Infrastructure
Session Aims and Scope

Monitoring and maintenance of the railway infrastructure is crucial for the operation of the whole railway system. Early detection of anomalies at their initial stage can prevent failures and traffic disruption, timely maintenance being necessary to keep the long-term cost of the railway infrastructure at a low value. For the monitoring and maintenance of the railway infrastructure, various methods are available, some of them being developed and improved in the recent years.

The aim of this special session is to gather contributions oriented toward the design and implementation of automatic monitoring and maintenance systems for railway infrastructure, so as to obtain an effective integrated decision support system for the entire railway infrastructure, with a relatively low cost, continuous updates, and monitoring on a daily basis. We invite contributions on topics related to all aspects of monitoring and maintenance, which include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Design of intelligent railway infrastructure systems
  • Automated detection of short track defects and other track anomalies
  • New methods and instrumentation for monitoring railway track health conditions
  • Interaction between railway operation and rail maintenance
  • System performance indicators
  • Modelling of the impact of disruptions and design of timetable
  • Big Data for railway infrastructure monitoring and maintenance
